St John focused on continuous improvement
After a comprehensive and wide ranging review process into workplace culture and staff wellbeing, St John is pleased to release two final reports today.
St John CEO Tony Ahern said this was the culmination of an unprecedented review process started in late 2015.
St John commissioned three reports into its services and the final report, the Independent Oversight Panel (IOP) Report, collated the recommendations of the first two reports to create 27 recommendations for action.
St John accepted all but one recommendation, referring this one to the WA government.
“We actioned the recommendations through an extensive operations plan, and tracked progress each month,” Mr Ahern said.
“Examining the 27 recommendations, I believed that some required the expert views of mental health professionals and researchers, so an Expert Advisory Group was formed in late 2016 to assess St John’s Wellbeing and Support programs and services.
“For a year, these external, independent experts weighed St John against international and national evidence, and concluded we offered a world-class service. I am also releasing their report today.
“These reports were commissioned as a part of our commitment to improving workplace culture and addressing areas we recognised needed improvement,” he said.
“We want to ensure our organisation is robust, responsive and forward thinking and provides a safe and healthy workplace for our people that places us in the best possible position to continue to serve the Western Australian community,” Mr Ahern said.
“We have confidence that our people are seeking help more than ever before, not just for issues related to major trauma, but to the every-day stresses that present in the workplace and in their personal lives.”
Some of the improvements include;
- Increase the scope, activity and visibility of the Wellbeing and Support team.
- A new employee engagement program that involves representatives from across the organisation.
- Evidence informed Mental Health and Wellbeing Education.
“To invite expert scrutiny into an organisation takes courage and determination by all of our people, and I am proud of the immense effort all of our people have made in order to reach this milestone today,” Mr Ahern said.
“Although these reviews are now complete and we have a final report, our work does not stop here.
“We are committed to continuous and ongoing improvement for our staff, volunteers and the community we serve,” Mr Ahern concluded.
