St John acts as key partner in Bstreetsmart

St John WA plays vital role in Bstreetsmart reenactment of motor crash scene performed in front of 8,000 schoolchildren

St John Ambulance is delighted to partner with the State's key emergency services, Royal Perth Hospital and the RAC in the annual Bstreetsmart event hosted by RAC WA.

'To be able to demonstrate first aid techniques as we have today to nearly 8,000 impressionable youth in such a direct and engaging way is tremendous,' said General Manager Event Health Services Phil Martin.

'History tells us that motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death for young people aged 25 or under, so these types of events are vitally important.'

Ambulance data reveals that in 2015, 669 people aged 17 to 21 had to be transported to hospital after being involved in motor vehicle accidents in WA.

Research shows that up to 15 per cent of road deaths in WA could be prevented by administering basic first aid at the scene of an accident.

"Many factors contribute to motor vehicle accidents, but education of drivers, particularly younger drivers, is important as it saves lives," said Mr Martin.

"It’s important that everybody takes on the responsibility of learning first aid which is a vital part of the chain of survival in ensuring the best possible outcome for the patient in road traffic accidents."
