Helping to save lives at remote mine sites in WA
St John Ambulance Western Australia has undertaken a strategic review of its Industrial Health Service (IHS) unit to ensure it remains WA’s leading provider of paramedical care at mining and industrial work sites.
St John Ambulance Industrial Health Services provides specialised paramedic and industrial health services to many of the largest mining and energy projects in the State.
St John Ambulance Service Director Iain Langridge said the industrial health service market had changed dramatically with the decline in mining activity over the past 12 months.
“Mining companies are now seeking increased value from their paramedical services, such as on-site first aid training for staff, drug and alcohol testing and health promotion activities,” explained Mr Langridge.
“St John Ambulance has responded by diversifying our Industrial Health Service accordingly to ensure we remain the premium provider of paramedical care.”
The unit has paramedics positioned at sites from the Kimberley to Goldfields and has capacity to expand the service.
Mr Langridge said St John is the only agency in WA to combine university-based training for its paramedics with significant on-road ambulance experience.
“Before paramedics can join this unit, they must have completed a minimum three years’ experience with our metropolitan ambulance service and return to operational duty in Perth annually to maintain their skills,” explained Mr Langridge.
While they may work in isolated areas, St John’s Industrial Health Service paramedics are not alone, with 24-hour access to the organisation’s entire emergency support network.
“This includes a direct line to our State Operations Centre and the reinforcement of paramedic and volunteer ambulance crews from 170 locations across Western Australia, spanning Wyndham to Albany,” Mr Langridge said.
“St John Ambulance has been the leading provider of industrial health services in Western Australia for over a decade and the State’s ambulance service operator for more than a century.”
“This experience reassures employers that in the unfortunate event of an emergency, their workers are in safe hands with St John’s Industrial Health Service.”
